The paper trail

Through the work we do for our professional bodies and societies we can generate a great deal of paper such as minutes of meetings, drafts of new legislation, membership lists and plans for study days. None of this is very sensitive material and we often allow it to accumulate, believing that one day it might be useful.

My diminutive friend and colleague was characterized by the oversized bag she had carried for years; in fact she never appeared without it until one day her back went and she had to resort to a pull-along shopping basket. She needed such a large bag because she recorded in longhand every meeting, conference and committee that she attended and, as she was the most conscientious and hardworking of people, that was a great many. It is true to say that she was gently mocked for her excessive note taking; she would agree that it was a neurosis and add that she was incapable of listening unless she wrote at the same time. However, my friend’s neurosis was regarded as a talent when we were asked to catalogue, for our society, details of its history. We spent hours trawling through her filing system, which was the size of a small government department. My friend had thrown nothing away for over 30 years and we managed to compile the most wonderful and detailed archive for posterity.
